We present two straightforward and cost-effective methods, based on metal-assisted chemical etching and a direct imprinting technique, to fabricate metal-covered porous amorphous silicon back reflectors for amorphous silicon solar cells. We demonstrate an increase of approximately 30% in both short-circuit current and overall efficiency with respect to a cell with a flat metal back reflector. This is achieved by implementing light trapping via either a roughened porous amorphous silicon layer or an imprinted periodic grating. This work provides a pathway to increase amorphous silicon solar cell efficiency via increased absorption without significantly impacting processing costs.

We aim to utilize the high surface area of a porous silicon (PSi) matrix coupled with semiconductor quantum dot (QD) amplifiers for ultrasensitive optical detection of small biomolecules using a dual-mode detection scheme. In our system, QDs attached to the target biomolecule serve as signal amplifiers by providing an additional refractive index increase beyond that of the smaller target molecules. The strong photoluminescence (PL) from the QDs serves as a secondary indication of target molecule attachment in the pores. A resulting increase in optical thickness of ∼190 nm and detection sensitivity of ∼700 nm/RIU have been demonstrated for attachment of glutathione capped CdTe QDs in the porous silicon matrix. Reflectance and PL measurements, combined with simulations, have been used to characterize the surface area coverage of the QDs within the porous framework, which is estimated at 10% for glutathione capped CdTe QDs.

Porous silicon waveguides with integrated porous silicon grating couplers are demonstrated as small molecule biosensors. Two fabrication methods are presented for the grating couplers: standard electron beam lithography with reactive ion etching and a new technique based on direct imprinting of porous substrates. Although the gratings fabricated using standard lithographic techniques have steeper sidewalls and enable a larger available sensing surface area inside the waveguide, the imprinted gratings have the advantage of rapid and low-cost fabrication. Both the lithographically and imprinted sensors are shown to have waveguide losses on the order of 10 dB/cm, and both are demonstrated for detection of 16mer nucleic acids.

We demonstrate a dual-mode sensing platform based on porous silicon (PSi) substrates coated with colloidal gold (Au) nanoparticles (NPs). This Au-PSi composite structure supports both molecular fingerprinting via surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and quantification of molecular binding via reflectance measurements. Reflectance shifts of 7-10 nm in the infrared region were observed in the case of adsorbing benzenethiol or antioxidant glutathione molecules on the surface of Au NPs. Subsequent SERS measurements showed unique identification for both molecules and provided a < 1 μM and < 1 mM detection resolution for benzenethiol and glutathione, respectively.

The effectiveness of humanitarian programs normally is evaluated according to a limited number of pre-defined objectives. These objectives typically represent only selected positive expected impacts of program interventions and as such, are inadequate benchmarks for understanding the overall effectiveness of aid. This is because programs also have unexpected impacts (both positive and negative) as well as expected negative impacts and expected positive impacts beyond the program objectives. The authors contend that these other categories of program impacts also should be assessed, and suggest a methodology for doing so that draws on input from the perspectives of beneficiaries. This paper includes examples of the use of this methodology in the field. Finally, the authors suggest future directions for improving this type of expanded assessment and advocate for its widespread use, both within and without the field of disaster response.

Porous silicon (PSi) waveguides are fabricated as a new platform for high sensitivity biosensors. Biomolecules infiltrated into the PSi waveguide increase the effective refractive index of the waveguide and change the angle at which incident light couples into a waveguide mode. Due to the high surface area to volume ratio of PSi and the confinement of optical energy in the region where the biomolecules reside, the waveguide resonance is very sensitive to small concentrations of infiltrated molecular species. A resonance width below 0.1° has been obtained, which is sufficient to detect one monolayer of DNA covering the pore walls. In this work, a prism is used for the waveguide coupling in an arrangement that is similar to traditional surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensing. Theoretical analysis suggests that an optimized PSi waveguide resonant sensor will show a 60-fold improvement in sensitivity when compared to a conventional SPR sensor due to the enhanced interaction between the electromagnetic field and biological material.

Tunable porous silicon mirrors were fabricated as building blocks for optical interconnects and as a first step towards efficient routing of information on a small size scale. The basic structures for the tunable mirrors are porous silicon microcavities infiltrated with liquid crystals. The optical properties of the mirrors are influenced by thermal or electric field modulation. When the device is heated or a voltage is applied, the orientation of the liquid crystals changes, causing a change in the effective refractive index of the liquid crystals within the mirror. The position of the reflectance resonance of the porous silicon microcavity is particularly sensitive to such changes in the refractive index. A reversible 10nm shift of the reflectance resonance of the mirror, leading to a 30% change in the amplitude of reflectance, has been observed due to thermal effects. Not only do these results show potential for future devices, but they also confirm that the liquid crystals are able to rotate in the constricted geometry of the porous silicon microcavities. For voltage driven devices, careful attention needs to be given to the configuration of the electrical contacts. The effectiveness of various device geometries has been investigated. Using standard lithographic techniques, aluminum contacts with minimum feature sizes of 10 microns were patterned directly on the porous silicon surface. A study on the use of free-standing porous silicon films was also performed.

Control over the 1.5 µm emission from erbium is desirable for communication and computational technologies because the erbium emission falls in the window of maximum transmission for silica based fiber optics. Tunable, narrow, directional, and enhanced erbium emission from silicon based 1-D photonic bandgap structures will be demonstrated. The structures are prepared by anodic etching of crystalline silicon and consist of two highly reflecting Bragg reflectors sandwiching an active layer. The cavities are doped by electro-migrating the erbium ions into the porous silicon matrix, followed by high temperature oxidation. By controlling the oxidation temperature, porosity, and thickness of the structure, the position of the erbium emission is tuned to emit in regions where the normal erbium emission is very weak. The erbium emission from the cavity is narrowed to a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 12 nm with a cavity quality factor Q of 130, highly directional with a 20 degree emission cone around the normal axis, and enhanced by more than one order of magnitude when compared to its lateral emission. Erbium photoluminescence (PL) from porous silicon 2-D photonic bandgap structures is also demonstrated.
